How Volunteering Works

After we receive your Consultant/Volunteer sign-up form, we will try to match your preferences with the classroom requests from area teachers.
  • Once we match your preferences with the classroom requests, you will need to attend a one-hour orientation. We will offer this orientation at several times and dates. We will even come to your work place. At this orientation, we will review the program materials and Junior Achievement policies. You will also receive your materials and teacher information.

  • After the orientation you will need to contact your teacher as soon as possible to make arrangements to visit the classroom.

  • You will want to visit with the teacher before your first JA visit with the students. This is a time to find the school, parking, understand school visitor policies, and find where the classroom is located.

  • You and the teacher will need to work out the times for the JA visits. The 5-10 visits need to be completed before the end of the semester.

  • The teacher should remain in the classroom with you at all times. The teacher is the one to provide discipline and help you guide the students to understanding the materials and activities you are bringing to the classroom. You are the business/community guest to the classroom; the teacher is the professional instructor.

  • Before your third class visit, you should have completed and returned your program states sheet.

  • All of the materials are for the classroom, so leave any leftover materials with the teacher, including the JA bag.

  • If for some reason you are unable to keep your appointment for your JA visit, please call the teacher as soon as possible. The teacher has worked your visit into the lesson plans for the day and will need to make other arrangements. You should reschedule for another visit during your call to avoid multiple follow-up calls which will lead to frustration for you and your teacher, and will cause the children to wonder why you stopped coming to visit them.

  • At the end of the semester you will receive information from the JA office which includes a renewal form and an evaluation form. Please take the time to fill each one of these out. The evaluation form helps us ensure that our volunteers are having a good JA experience. The renewal form helps us prepare for the next semester.
